Per San Pedro facciamo un altro viaggio notturno, partendo da Iquique all'1am. Arriviamo a San Pedro De Atacama verso le 9 am, dopo aver cambiato bus a Calama.
Siamo nel deserto di Atacama e San Pedro e' il centro turistico piu grande da dove si possono fare diverse escursioni tra laghi salati, geyser, terme, lagune. Noi abbiamo una lista di luoghi da vedere consigliati da altri viaggiatori ma il vero obiettivo in realtà' e' visitare la Valle della luna e organizzare il viaggio per il lago salato di Uyuni in Bolivia. Se ci scappa il tempo per il geyser e le terme, meglio!
Troviamo un ostello molto spartano un po fuori dal centro, obiettivo primario e' il risparmio (e la pulizia!). Siamo fortunati troviamo entrambi.
Qui incontriamo un ragazzo che ha ballato al carnevale di Arica e per caso ho ripreso nel video, incredibile veramente piccolo il mondo! Ci spiega meglio le diverse danze e yes! Ci avevo preso sul Diablada e i tori!!
Altro fatto incredibile accaduto qui nel deserto di San Pedro de Atacama e' la pioggia. Sono stati due giorni umidi e fangosi: la mattina caldo da costume e nel tardo pomeriggio 20 gradi di meno e pioggia. Questo vuol dire che riusciamo a vedere la valle de la Luna ma nulla di piu. Le varie gite alle attrazioni naturali sono tutte chiuse o meglio le strade piene di fango e acqua, quindi impraticabili.
La Valle da la Luna
Questa e' una vallata-parco di circa 6 km di lunghezza per 7 km di larghezza. La Valle della luna e' chiamata cosi per la presenza di solo rocce sabbiose ricche di sale, che danno un aspetto lunare alla vallata. Quando piove, in teoria dicono poco!, la pioggia si ferma sulla superficie e si cristallizza creando uno strato bianco che da quel tocco di extraterrestre al parco. Il giro e' durato 4 ore, tra belvedere, saline antiche e piccole passeggiate per vedere conformazioni rocciose strane, come le tre marie. Queste tre rocce secondo un sacerdote di San Pedro assomigliavano alle tre marie; secondo noi la somiglianza non c'è, chissà' che sole quel giorno!
Abbiamo avuto un cielo carico d'acqua ed elettricità' che ci ha seguiti tutto il tempo. La corrente elettrostatica era cosi forte che in cima ai mirador si poteva sentire e vedere la forza dell'elettricità' (i miei capelli sono la prova concreta, ho avuto letteralmente il pelo dritto come il gatto!). Tralascio di dire che Pietro ha giocato come un bambino facendo video e sperimentando le scariche elettriche con vari materiali.
Tuttavia il cielo nuvoloso ed elettrico ha donato una cornice molto suggestiva allo scenario della Valle già' impressionante. Bella bella!
San Pedro de Atacama paese
Paesino creato per i turisti, ci sono in pratica due vie principali piene di ristoranti, bar, agenzie di viaggio, negozi di souvenir e mini market. La cittadina perfetta per il turista, tranne per le strade non asfaltate. Ci e' sembrato caratteristico ma dopo un pomeriggio di pioggia torrenziale il fango ci arrivava fino alle orecchie.
E' febbraio quindi e' la stagione delle piogge che chiamano l'inverno boliviano. (Ma non eravamo in Cile?!)
A San Pedro i prezzi ovviamente non hanno niente del deserto cileno, appartengono piuttosto alla pingue America, del Nord.
Abbiamo girato parecchio per trovare un'agenzia di viaggio affidabile per andare in Bolivia. Cercando online ci sono commenti di tutti i tipi, alcuni mettono veramente paura come autisti che guidano ubriachi ed insonnoliti o che scompaiono e turisti che guidano da soli per tornare indietro.
Alla fine decidiamo per Atacama Mistica e che la fortuna ci assista!
Curiosita' del posto:
Il San Pedro e' anche un cactus allucinogeno che viene chiamato cosi perche' San Pietro ha le chiavi del paradiso e dicono che con l'assunzione del cactus si 'arriva in paradiso'.
Inoltre San Pedro de Atacama e' rinomata per le feste illegali nel deserto, utilizzando il cactus (di cui sopra) e sostanze fornite dai vicini boliviani.
Storia recente e' la scomparsa un ragazzo di 35 anni che stava cercando di organizzare feste legali sotterranee nel deserto, richiedendo tutti i permessi del caso. Lo stanno ancora cercando; ci spiegano che tra sanpedrini e boliviani c'è un'organizzazione molto forte che controlla la zona per le feste e per questo tipo di turismo...
San Pedro de Atacama To reach San Pedro we did another journey by night, starting from Iquique at 1am. We arrived in San Pedro de Atacama around 9am, after changing buses in Calama.
We were in the Atacama Desert and San Pedro is the biggest tourist center from where you can organise several trips between salt lakes, geysers, hot springs and lagoons. We had a list of places to see recommended by other travellers but the real goals actually were to visit the Valley of the Moon and organize the trip to the Uyuni salt lake in Bolivia. It would be good to visit the geysers and the hot springs too, we'll see!
We found a very basic hostel a bit outside the center, as our primary objective is saving (and a clean spot!). We were lucky we found both.
Here we met a guy who danced at the carnival in Arica and by chance I took the video of him. Unbelievable how small the world is!
He explains better the different dances and yes! I got the features of the Diablada and the bulls' dance!!
Another incredible fact happened here in the desert of San Pedro de Atacama was the rain. The two days, we stayed, were wet and muddy: the morning hot for a swimsuit and in the late afternoon 20 degrees less and rain. This meant that we could only see the Valley of the Moon, but nothing else. The various trips to the natural attractions were all closed or the streets full of mud and water, pretty much impassable.
The Valley of the Moon
This is a valley-park with an extension of about 6 km long for 7 km wide. The Valley of the Moon is so named for the presence of sandy rocks rich in salt, which gives the lunar look at the valley. When it rains, in theory a little!, the rain stops on the surface and it crystallises creating a white layer that gives the extraterrestrial touch to the park.
The tour lasted 4 hours, between lookouts, ancient salt mines and small walks to see the strange rock formations, such as the three Marie. These three rocks according to a priest of San Pedro resembled three Marie; we think the resemblance is just not there.. who knows how strong was the sun that day!
We had a sky full of water and electricity all the time. The electrostatic current was so strong that on top of the Mirador you could feel and see the power of it (my hair was the concrete proof, I had literally my hair straight like a scared cat!). I omitted to say that Pietro played as a child doing video and tested electrical discharges with various materials.
However, the cloudy and electrical sky donated a very picturesque background to the scenario of the Valley, already awesome. We loved it!
San Pedro de Atacama – the village
This is a village created for tourists: there are basically two main streets lined with restaurants, bars, travel agencies, souvenir shops and mini market. The town is perfect for tourists, except for unpaved roads. It seemed to us really characteristic but after an afternoon of torrential rain the mud came up to our ears.
It is February and it is the rainy season, they call the Bolivian winter. (Were not we in Chile?!)
In San Pedro the prices obviously have nothing to do with the Chilean desert, they belong rather to fat America, of the North.
We searched a lot to find a reliable travel agency to go to Bolivia. Looking at online comments of all kinds: there are some that are really scary such as drivers who drove drunk and sleepy or disappeared, and tourists who needed to drive alone to go back to Chile.
At the end we decided for Atacama Mistica, hoping for the best!
Curiosities of the place:
The San Pedro is also a hallucinogenic cactus so called because of St. Peter. He is believed to have the keys of heaven and they say that with the assumption of the cactus 'one can reach heaven'.
Also San Pedro de Atacama is well-known for illegal parties organised in the desert, using the cactus (above) and substances provided by the Bolivian neighbours.
Recent history is about a disappearance a 35yrs old man, who was trying to organise legal and underground parties in the desert, applying for all required permits. They're still looking for him; apparently there is a very strong organisation (between San-pedreans and Bolivians) that controls the area for the non-legal parties and for this type of tourism.
