Con difficolta' partiamo verso sud da Santiago il 20 Febbraio per arrivare a Puerto Montt dopo 12 ore di viaggio in autobus. La difficolta' l'abbiamo trovata nel comunicare a Taty e Costanzo le giuste indicazioni per trovare la stazione degli autobus (ce ne sono diverse e non era chiaro nemmeno a me e Pietro quale fosse, nonostante avessimo comprato i biglietti) e nel traffico cittadino in uscita dalla citta' il venerdi sera.
Tuttavia, i nostri eroi ce la fecero!
La regione dei laghi si chiama cosi ovviamente per la presenza di numerosi laghi glaciali, sparsi tra vulcani innevati e parchi nazionali. Dicono sia una tra le zone piu caratteristiche del Cile, siamo qui per scoprirlo.
1 Giorno
Una volta a Puerto Montt ci siamo messi subito alla ricerca della macchina a noleggio, cosa questa che si e' dimostrata un'impresa piu' dura del previsto: anche i grandi noleggiatori non avevano jeep disponibili, in pratica non c'erano piu macchine in citta' per il week end. Non ci siamo persi d'animo e siamo andati a mangiare!
Dopo un caffe', biscotti, torta, pane tostato, marmellata e molto altro ancora abbiamo trovato la macchina! 🙂
La macchina:
abbiamo noleggiato un mostro; penso sia la macchina piu tamarra ed enorme che abbiamo mai guidato. Uno shock dopo la smart!
In realta' e' stata perfetta per noi in quanto era un 4x4 adatto alle strade sterrate che dovevamo percorrere, spaziosa per gli zaini e comoda per tutti. Un affarone, solamente un po complicato da parcheggiare.
Nel pomeriggio dopo aver trovaro una pensione, frutto di un breve pellegrinaggio in citta' e compromessi nel gruppo (su budget e condivisione camera – era da 4, si e' dormito tutti insieme come in colonia), ci siamo messi in moto: prima tappa Frutillar sulla costa del lago Llanquihue, passando per Puerto Varas.
Frutillar ci e' piaciuta molto: piccolina, pulita, animata da villeggianti ancora a mollo alle 8 di sera, con una deliziosa spiaggia lungo-lago, un bel molo, il vulcano Osorno nello sfondo e un meraviglioso teatro (teatro del lago) terminato da poco.

Sulla strada di ritorno ci fermiamo a mangiare a Puerto Varas dal 'Gordito', un ristorante scovato da Costanzo che ha avuto molto successo nel gruppo: in realta' tutti erano molto soddisfatti dei loro pesci mentre io ho preso la 'paila marina', nota zuppa di pesce, ma questa volta popolata di troppi molluschi e pezzi di maiale. Uno sfreggio!
2 Giorno
Questo e' stato il primo vero giorno di viaggio in quanto abbiamo viaggiato insieme, dormito insieme, mangiato insieme nelle ultime 24ore... siamo ancora in rodaggio su tempistica colazione-bagno, ma ce la siamo cavata bene.
Eravamo diretti a Lago Todos los Santos, un famoso angolo nel parco nazionale Vincente Perez Rosales da dove si possono ammirare tre vulcani: Osorno, Puntiagudo e Tronador.
La giornata era meravigliosa e assolata, perfetta per prendere un po' di sole a Petrohue', il piccolo paesino di villeggiatura davanti al lago. Qui si potevano fare tante escursioni ed attivita': rafting, canoa, cavalcate, trekking, prendere una barca per andare a Peulla dall'altro lato o semplicamente arrivare all'isola Margarita in mezzo al lago... abbiamo deciso di comune accordo di fare merenda e sdraiarci al sole come dei trichechi spiaggiati. Una goduria!
Sulla strada di ritorno ci siamo fermati a vedere Los Saltos de Petrohue che sono delle cascatelle piccole ma abbastanza sceniche per tutto il contesto intorno: acqua turchese-smeraldo, spuma bianca delle cascate, rocce laviche nere del canyon, diverse sfumature di verde della vegetazione intorno e il vulcano Osorno innevato che troneggia la scena.
Qui Pietro ha deciso di fare un po' di attivita' fisica lanciandosi, attaccato ad una corda, tra gli alberi; lo chiamano il salto del pioneeros, in pratica ha saltato e rimasto penzoloni tipo cita la scimmia.
Come ultima tappa ci siamo lasciati le terme di Ralun, ma purtroppo le abbiamo trovate inondate dalle acque del fiume Petrohue e questo non ci ha permesso di godere del tramonto 'a mollo' come programmato. Costanzo non ha resistito e si e' buttato nel fiume comunque, ma e' stato l'unico folle per noi faceva troppo freddo.
Abbiamo ripieghiamo sulla pittoresca Puerto Varas, dove abbiamo travato freddo ma anche un mercatino artigianale, un concerto di band emergenti (strilloni) e una fila di camioncini fighetti che vendevano cibo.
Abbiamo optato per un panino caldo con l'agnello per combattere il freddo ma senza vino, pare sia vietato bere in strada.
Soddisfatti della due giornate ci siamo messi a letto, pronti per partire belli freschi e riposati la mattina seguente per l'isola di Chiloe'.
The Region of the Lakes
With difficulty we headed towards the South from Santiago on the 20th of February to get to Puerto Montt after a 12 hours bus trip. The difficulty we found was in communicating to Taty and Costanzo the right directions to find the bus station (there are several ones and it was not clear even to me and Pietro which one was it, even though we bought the tickets!); other difficult bit was the traffic in leaving from the city on Friday evening.
However, our heroes made it!
The Region of the Lakes is called so obviously due to the presence of numerous glacial lakes, scattered among snow-capped volcanoes and national parks. They say it is one of the most characteristic areas of Chile, we are here to find out.
1 Day
Once in Puerto Montt we began looking for the rental car, this was a touch more hard than expected: even large companies had no available jeeps, in practice there were not cars in city for the weekend. We did not lose heart and we went to eat!
After a coffee, cookies, cake, toast, jam and much more we found the car! 🙂

We rented a monster; I think the most huge and awful car we have ever driven. A shock after the smart!
In reality she was perfect for us because it was a 4W suitable for dirty roads that we had to go, spacious for the backpacks and comfy for everybody. A bargain, only a bit complicated to park.
In the afternoon after having found a accommodation, the result of a brief pilgrimage to the city and compromises in the group (on budget and sharing room - it was for 4, we slept together as in a school trip), we set in motion: first stop Frutillar on the coast of Lake Llanquihue, passing for Puerto Varas.
We enjoyed Fruttilar: petite, clean, animated by tourists still soaking at 8 pm, with a lovely beach-long lake, a beautiful pier, the Osorno Volcano in the background and a wonderful theatre (Theatre of the Lake) recently completed. A perfect postcard for our photos at the beginning of the trip.
On the way back we stopped to eat in Puerto Varas at 'Gordito', a restaurant discovered by Costanzo, which has been very successful in the group: in reality they all were very satisfied with their fish, while I had the 'paila marine', a fish soup, but this time it was populated by too many shellfish and pork's pieces. Outrageous!
2 Day
This was the first real day of travelling as we traveled together, slept together, ate together in the last 24 hours... we were still adjusting our breakfast-bathroom timing, but we got along well.
We headed to Lake Todos los Santos, a famous corner in Vincente Perez Rosales National Park where three volcanoes can be seen: Osorno, Puntiagudo and Tronador.
The day was beautiful and sunny, perfect for sunbathing at Petrohue, the small holiday village in front of the lake. Here it is possible to do few excursions and activities: rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, take a boat to go to the other side to Peulla or simply to get to the island Margarita in the middle of the lake... we mutually decided to have a snack and to lie down in the sun like sea-lions.
A real pleasure!
On the way back we stopped to see Los Saltos de Petrohue, which are small waterfalls, but enough scenic for the whole context around: emerald-turquoise water, white foam of the waterfalls, black lava rocks of the canyon, different shades of green of the vegetation around and the snowy Osorno volcano towering the scene.
Here Pietro decided to do a bit of physical activity throwing himself, attached to a rope, from a tree; it is called the jumping of the pioneeros, practically he jumped and dangled around the trees like cita, Tarzan monkey.
As our last stop we left the hot spring baths of Ralun, but unfortunately we found them flooded by the water of the River Petrohue and this didn't allow us to enjoy the sunset 'soaking', as planned. Costanzo did not resist and had a dive in the river, but it was the only crazy one as for us it was way too cold.
We came back on the picturesque Puerto Varas, where we found cold weather but also a craft market, a concert of emerging bands and a row of fancy trucks that were selling food. We opted for a hot sandwich with lamb to fight the cold, but without wine, it seems to be forbidden to drink on the street.
Satisfied with the first two days we went to bed, ready to go the next morning to the island of Chiloe', beautifully fresh and rested.
