In vero la cittadina non e' cosi interessante, se non fosse che e' stata la capitale delle ferrovie Ecuadoriane dall'inizio del 18 secolo fin verso l'inizio di quello appena passato. Poi la mancanza di interesse verso questa forma di trasporto ha portato alla rovina il settore che e' pian piano scivolato nell'oblio, fino al 2008. In quell'anno infatti, il presidente neoeletto Correa (quello famoso per aver detto che il debito nazionale era immorale e si e' rifiutato di pagarlo) ha deciso di rifinanziare l'infrastruttura intravedendo un futuro, non solo, come mezzo di trasporto ma anche come attrazione turistica. Il risultato e' affascinante.
Le stazioni una volta in rovina sono state rimodernate ed oggi vengono usate sia come stazioni del treno, ma anche come museo e luoghi per eventi come mostre, concerti di musica classica ed opera.
Ho preso il treno per fare un'escursione ad Urbina, circa 50 Km da Riobamba. Dicono gli ecuadoriani che la stazione Urbina e' la più alta al mondo (3600 m), e scorrendo il tracciato del treno mentre si viaggia si immaginano le difficoltà che hanno avuto nel costruire la ferrovia. All'arrivo l'aria si e' decisamente fatta più fresca, le nubi ahime' coprono il vulcano Chimborrazo, quindi mi devo accontentare di una foto ad un poster, presa in un momento in cui il tempo e' stato più clemente. Nella caffetteria della stazione mi viene offerto un te ed una empanadas, mentre viene proiettato un video dell'ultimo 'hielero'...
Gli 'hieleri' erano coloro che andavano alle pendici del ghiacciaio del vulcano per estrarre il ghiaccio che poi veniva inviato in tutti gli angoli del paese per conservare il cibo a lungo o per fare i gelati. L'avvento dei frigoriferi ha chiaramente ucciso questo mercato, ma il video e' affascinante.
Baños
Il giorno dopo l'escursione montana mi metto in viaggio verso nord, direzione Baños. Il viaggio non e' lungo, poco più di 2 ore, durante le quali il bus si inerpica fin quasi a quattromila metri. L'aria e' rarefatta, sembra di viaggiare sopra le nuvole ed il mal di testa non tarda ad arrivare. Dopo questo saliscendi si arriva a Baños: una perla in mezzo alle Ande. Acquattata in una valle verde lussureggiante questa cittadina beneficia delle acque vulcaniche che scendono dai pendii. Bagni termali ovunque ed a qualunque prezzo; non c'è bisogno di dire che ci sono andato tutte le sere!
Le attrazioni qui a Baños non mancano, si va dalle escursioni sulle montagne a quelle verso il lato amazzonico del paese, ad est. Per chi lo desidera c'è' anche il bungee jumping e canyoning (volare sopra i canyon come superman, ma appesi ad una corda.
La bicicletta rimane la mia preferita (anche perché volare appeso ad una corda e senza una elica sopra la testa che mi tiene in aria non mi attira). L'ho presa più volte per andare ad esplorare i d
intorni del paesino, in particolare a vedere le cascate che proprio non mancano. La più famosa e' quella del diavolo; dicono (gli ecuadoriani) che e' una delle meraviglie del mondo.
Lungo la via mi sono imbattuto in una centrale idroelettrica e l'ingegnere che e' in me m'ha suggerito di fermarmi a curiosare. Ho chiesto di vedere l'impianto, e dopo una lunga attesa mi hanno fatto entrare e visitare la centrale 🙂

Ecuador – Pietro verso nord da Cuenca a Banos, passando per Riobamba Riobamba
The city itself is not very interesting, but it was the Ecuador's railway capital since the beginning of 18th century 'till the end of the past one. The lack of interest lead this transport system in ruin until 2008, when the new elected president Correa (famous for refusing to pay national debt mainly to the USA claiming it was immoral) decided to finance the railway infrastructure to make it, not just, a transport system, but a tourist attraction. The results are fascinating: train stations once in ruin flourished and today they are used also as museums and locations for exhibits, events and concert.
I took the train for a little trip to Urbina, 50 km from Riobamba. Ecuadorians say that this is the highest trains station in the entire world (3600 m); while the train travelled along the railway I tryed to imagine the difficulties the engineers had to build this track. At the arrival the air is thinner and cooler; the clouds covered the Chimborrazo Vulcan, so I had to settle for a picture of a poster, taken in a moment when the weather was a bit better. In the cafeteria of the station I was offered a cup of tea and an empanadas, while I was watching a video of the last 'hielero'...
The 'hieleros' were those who were at the volcano's feet of the glacier to extract the ice, which was then sent to all corners of the country to store food or to make ice cream. The advent of refrigerators has clearly killed this market, but the video was fascinating.
Baños
The day after I caught the bus heading north to Baños. The trip is not too long, about two hours and the bus climbs up to 4000m. Air gets thinner and it seams we are travelling above the clouds and headache does arrive pretty soon. After this up and down the bus arrives in Baños. The little town lies in the valley between high mountains, at 2000m. All around is green, and the thermal baths are everywhere; indeed the volcanic hot water arrives to the town from the surrounding slopes. They are everywhere and a any price; it is irrelevant to say I went every night!
Plenty of attractions in Baños, from mountain climbing to Amazon excursions, east of the country. For those needing adrenaline there is bungee jumping and canyoning (flying like superman over canyons attached to a rope). I am more classic and decided for the bicycle (flying attached to a rope does not appeal to me). I took it a few times, to explore the little town and the surrounding area, full of natural waterfalls; the most famous is “the devil's fall”, Ecuadorians claim that it is one of the world marvels.
Along the way down to this waterfall I saw an hydroelectric power plant, and decided to stop for curiosity. I asked if it was possible to visit the plant, and after a long wait I was admitted inside 🙂
