E' in stile gotico ed offre una vista suggestiva, una volta saliti sulle torri degli orologi che non funzionano.

Mercato
E' la nostra tappa fissa in ogni citta' o cittadina, e anche questa volta ci siamo passati, spesso.
Il mercato non era grandissimo ma ordinato in sezioni: fiori e frutta in un lato, pesce e carne nell'altro e un piano con banconi di 'comida' al minuto. Una nuova scoperta culinaria e' stata 'l'encebollada', uno stufato di pesce rinforzato con tanta cipolla, dicono una mano santa per far passare I postumi della sbronza. La colazione che abbiamo gustato per una paio di mattine e' stata con frittelle di banane e avena con un uovo cotto al tegamino sdraiato sopra; c'e' anche la versione completa con carne, riso e insalatina, ma abbiamo passato. Questi vengono serviti con una tazza di caffe super dolce o acqua aromatizzata (te) anche questo dolce.
Molto popolare da queste parti e' la corvina che viene servita fritta con un piattino di cevice (pesce crudo con limone e cipolla, per semplificare), riso, patate e verdure lesse. Provata e possiamo dire che e' super!
Il nostro appuntamento giornaliero era con Aurora, che dalla sua postazione mesceva freschissimi succhi di frutta: il mio preferito era mora e latte di cocco mentre per Pietro arancia e carota.
Capilla de Hombre (Guayasamil)
Questa si trova attaccata alla casa museo del pittore ecuadoriano Guayasamil, che ha voluto una cappella in onore all'uomo e alle sue sofferenze, visto che di cappelle in onore ai santi ce ne sono piu che a sufficienza.
Le sue opere rappresentano prevalentemente l'angoscia, la sofferenza e le conseguenze della guerra sull'uomo, quindi si ha una carica espressiva forte e pesante che schiaffeggia chi guarda. Nel suo ultimo periodo artistico si concentra sul rapporto madre-figlio, producendo quadri piu caldi e armoniosi che fanno parte del ciclo della 'tenerezza'.
E' stato istruttivo scoprire questo artista, dalla vita cosi interessante; caratteristica pittorico-espressiva che ci ha colpito ad entrambi e' stata la rappresentazione delle mani: sono belle, dettagliate e parlano, ci hanno colpito cosi tanto che abbiamo comprato due riproduzioni.
Midad del mundo
La meta' del mondo e' un centro costruito per marcare dove approssimativamente passa l'Equatore; distante da Quito circa 1 ora e mezza di autobus, e' una mini città con planetario, ristoranti e negozi con artigianato e souvenir, monumento eretto in onore alla spedizione francese che ne marco' le coordinate e un museo sulla storia dal sito e centro di turismo di tutto l'Ecuador. E' un sito turistico molto ben confezionato e tenuto: curiosa e' la striscia gialla disegnata in terra che indica l'Ecuatore, che misura in larghezza 5 km ed e' lunga 'tutto il mondo' 🙂
Devo dire che e' stata una visita istruttiva per me.
Otavalo
Dopo Quito, Otavalo e' stata una tappa d'obbligo: abitata prevalentemente dagli indigeni kichwa degli Otavalos - famosi per la loro abilità nel tessile e nel commercio, e' conosciuto come capitale interculturale dell'Ecuador.
Otavalo ospita il mercato più grande del Sud America, dove si possono trovare articoli di tutti i tipi, dai vestiti ai souvenirs passando per l'artigianato e statuine religiose.
Otavalo ha rappresentato una vera tentazione ma ne siamo uscito senza fare troppi danni, al portafogli.
Curiosità:
a nord del paese, quindi nella zona di Quito, gli autobus si pagano a tempo; quindi per fare Quito Otavalo, circa 90-100 km, abbiamo pagato $1,60 x quasi due ore. Praticamente nulla.
Il presidente in carica Rafael Correa va in ufficio (al palazzo presidenziale nella piazza centrale di Quito) in elicottero per evitare di passare nella piazza, dove il mite popolo ecuadoriano ha attentato alla vita di ben due presidenti precedenti, riuscendo a 'matarli' (assassinarli) e dopo aver organizzato un un colpo di stato nel 2010.
Tuttavia il palazzo ora e' aperto gratuitamente al pubblico per le visite.
L'Ecuador e' pulito, o meglio le città e cittadine che abbiamo visitato ci sono sembrate pulite e ordinate. L'educazione all'ambiente e' un valore molto sentito, sul quale scuole e societa' puntano molto. Abbiamo assistito in diversi luoghi a manifestazioni pubbliche e campagne in piazza per sensibilizzare la gente; vedendo i risultati possiamo testimoniare che stanno facendo un buon lavoro.
Ecuador – Quito e Otavalo
The capital of Ecuador is almost 3000 meters high and, although we promised to stay away from the mountains and cold weather (in this case chilly), we appreciated his 'old centre', declared world heritage by UNESCO.
In addition to the old part of the city, there is the most trendy quarter of Mariscal, also known as 'gringolandia'... and for this reason we have been just for a quick walk.
The center of Quito is very charming with its colonial style, the narrow streets, the museums and many hidden churches.

It is in Gothic style and offers an impressive view, once climbed the towers of watches - that do not work.

Market
This is our real landmark in every town or village, and this time we have been there often.
The market wasn't big but separeted in sections: flowers and fruit in one side, fish and meat in the other and an entire floor with 'comida' standers. A new culinary discovery was 'the encebollada', a fish stew reinforced with onion, they say the best to help with the hangover.
We tryed breakfast for a couple of mornings and it was with banana and oatmeal pancakes with an egg cooked fried lying above them; there's also the full version with meat, rice and salad, but we passed it. These were served with a super sweet cup of coffee or extremely sweet flavored water (the').
Very popular here is the corvina served fried with a saucer of cevice (raw fish with lemon and onion, to simplify), rice, potatoes and boiled vegetables. We tryed and can say that it is super!
Our daily appointment was with Aurora, who from his position mixed fresh juices: my favorite was blackberry and coconut milk while Pietro's orange and carrot.
Capilla de Hombre (Guayasamil)
This is attached to the house-museum of the Ecuadorian painter Guayasamil, who wanted a chapel in honor of the man and his sufferings, as chapels in honor of the saints there are more than enough.
His works are mainly inspired by anguish, pain and consequences of war on humans: so you have a strong emotional load, it is like a heavy slap to the viewers. In his latest artistic period, he focused on the mother-child relationship, producing warm and harmonious paintings, which are part of the cycle of 'tenderness'.
It was instructive to discover this artist, with such an interesting life; the pictorial-expressive characteristic, that struck both of us, was the representation of the hands: they are beautiful, detailed and they 'speak', they hit us so much that we bought two copies.
Midad del mundo
The 'half of the world' is a center built to mark where the equator passes – more or less; far from Quito approximately 1 hour and a half by bus, this is a mini city with planetarium, restaurants and shops with handicrafts and souvenirs, monument erected in honor of the French expedition that marked the coordinates and a museum on the history of the site and the center of tourism about Ecuador. It is a very well packaged and mantained tourist site: curious bit is the yellow strip drawn on the ground indicating the Ecuator, which measures 5 km in width and and worldwide 'long' 🙂
I have to say it was an instructive visit for me.
Otavalo
After Quito, Otavalo was a must: inhabited mainly by indigenous Kichwa of Otavalos - famous for their skills in the textile and commerce, it is known as cultural capital of Ecuador.
Otavalo hosts the largest market in South America, where you can find articles of all kinds, from clothes to souvenirs through crafts and religious figures.
Otavalo was a real temptation but we came out without too much damage to the wallet.
Curiosity:
North of the country, around the area of Quito, buses are paid by time: so from Quito to Otavalo, about 90-100 km, we paid $ 1.60 for almost two hours. Practically nothing.
The President Rafael Correa goes to the office (at the presidential palace in the central square of Quito) by helicopter to avoid passing through the square, where the 'pacific' Ecuadorian people have tried to kill two previous presidents, managing to 'matarlos' (murder them) and after organizing a coup in 2010.
However, the palace now is open free to the public for tours.
Ecuador is clean, or rather the cities and villages we visited seemed clean and tidy. The environmental education is a value strongly felt, on which schools and society focuse a lot. We have seen in several places public events and campaigns on the streets to raise enviro awareness; we saw the results and we can testify that they are doing a good job.
