Patagonia Cilena – Carretera Austral, 2a parte

Chilean Patagonia - Carretera Austral, 2nd Part. -Fifth Day on the Carretera, Capilla de Marmol. 5_PuertoRioTRanquillo_CapillasDeMarmol (60)Finally for me and Pietro, we got to see the famous Cathedral of marble and its chapels: these are caves of marble that sit on the water's surface; they are formed by the constant movement of the water that has dug the rocks and the wind that has smoothed the block, making it round and smooth. The Capillas are impressive in their shape but especially for their colors. When we got into the boat it was cloudy and very windy, enough to make us jumping for the strong waves. We were eight on a smallish boat, but the boy who accompanied us was really talented, sailing gently trying to avoid each nasty wave. 5_PuertoRioTRanquillo_CapillasDeMarmol (2) Today for us was an achievement, considering that we had tried to visit the chapels of marble already in December when we crossed the border from Argentina entering to Chile Chico, dreaming to head to Puerto Rio Tranquillo. In the end we picked the wrong day, as on Saturday the village of Chile Chico was deserted and sleepy. Fortunately we were stubborn and we persevered: it was definitely worth it and this time we were also in good company. -Sixth Day on Carretera, attempt to Laguna San Rafael. We booked an excursion to visit the very famous and beautiful San Rafael Lagoon. Pietro was not interested in the glacier's lagoon and decided to stay in bed, lucky him! (just a small preview). 6_GlaciarSan Rafael Tentativo (3)The day did not look good since the beginning: it was raining and it had rained all night with strong winds. However we tried. We woke up at 6am, drove 75 km to reach the river where he had an appointment with our tour guide. Once arrived at the river, we had a scary scene in front of us: it was with high tide and strong current, we noticed two boats in the other side, quite little more like tenders. Here the face expression of Costanzo said it all, while Taty and I had an attack of hysterical laughs, we could not stop! In the end we went on the other side with one of these boats, under the rain; then we got on a van, that, after other 9 km on dirty road, took us to the shelter, where we found the 'real' boat for the lagoon excursion. 6_GlaciarSan Rafael Tentativo (25)In those 9 km journey, we thought the mini cruise we were doing on the lagoon, to relax and landscapes; There were also brought books to read because the navigation was 3-4 hours. You will not believe the dismay when we discovered that the boat for the trip was slightly largest dinghy river but covered. We could not believe it. The agreement between us and the guide was to get out of the bay to see better how the weather was and to decide once there whether to continue or not. Obviously once we arrived out there it was decided to go back, which I had already hoped after umpteenth wave that had slapped us. I was quite annoyed due to the force of the waves, the small size of the boat and the rain - it rained even inside the boat! 6_GlaciarSan Rafael Tentativo (32)Cutting the story short: the weather sucked and we could have seen even from home in reality, but at least we tried and they gained something for the day (they charged only 20 euro for breakfast and transport). Once back at the shelter, eager to return home, we were trapped for lunch which was ready, delaying our return until 3 in the afternoon. Funny that to drive the 75 km took us 1 hour and 45 mins, while for the return it was 45 minutes net; thanks to Costanzo's fast driving, of which neither I nor Tatiana complaint having the strong desire to go home asap. This was a day to forget, so we decided to pack up and start over the return after requesting a refund for the excursion's failure. 6_Ritorno Villa Cierro Castillo (9)We spent the night in Villa Cerro Castillo, in the midst of absolute desolation: only four restaurants, two of which were closed and the open ones didn't want to serve us; only a supermarket was open but with few provisions, and we found a house barely acceptable to sleep. Furthermore, once arrived at the village the car fainted due to the low battery. Fortunately, after a bit of rest the battery recovered, or it'd have been a total and complete despair. -Seventh day on Carretera, Coyhaique. After a nice breakfast, we resumed our journey to go up north: Tatiana and Costanzo had a flight to Santiago where they spent the last days of vacation between Valparaiso and Viña, while Peter and I took back the car to the rental in Puerto Montt. 7_Parque Coyahique (4)Here in Coyhaique, after having found a nice apartment, we went to the national park for a walk. This was not very large but considering the beautiful day and willing to do some exercise, we did almost all the trails, while Pietro was asleep in the car. Our last dinner of this stretch of holiday all together was at the 'casino of the bomberos', exactly the restaurant of the fire-fighters. Here in Chile the 'casinos' are well-known for good food, generous portions and reasonable cost. And so it was. -Eighth day on Carretera, besos y carinos. The group split: those who go to sea and those continuing on the mountains: next meeting with our perfect travel mates (and compatible DNA) would be in Santiago on the 10th of March.
