Patagonia Cilena – Da Coyhaique a Puerto Montt.

Bono!
Chilean Patagonia – From Coyhaique to Puerto Montt, the return. The task was to bring the car back to Puerto Montt to the renter which was waiting for us on the 8th of March. In addition to the 600 km journey from Coyhaique to Puerto Montt, we made little excursions that we did not have time to do with Costanzo and Tatiana, like a walk around to Puyuhuapi, the excursion to the Pumalin Park near Chaiten and eating at Angelmo, the fish market of Puerto Montt. The first day, after leaving the8_Puyuhiapi_Terme (3) guys, we drove for about 260 km trying to make a race against time and to go over the two blocks on the road. We understood why they must close the road: to expand the carretera they also used the explosive and having cars and trucks around would not be really secure. The second day, we arrived at Chaiten with a scary rain; we decided anyway to get info for a little excursion to the Pumalin Park. 9_Chaiten_ParcoPumalin_VulcanoChaiten (28)The time suddenly improved and opened up for a whole afternoon, so that we could climb the volcano Chaiten. This volcano was still active but the last eruption was in 2008, covering all vegetation of the mountain and creating three new tips on the crater of the volcano (it got up of 200m). We climbed the 22 km to the top and once between micro smoking craters, wet with sweat, we could enjoy an incredible landscape: lagoons, mountains immersed in green vegetation up to the sea. We spent the night at the hotel Don Carlo, a three-storey property with statues of saints and madonnas in every corner, but it was super clean and warm. We cooked a 500grams of pasta between two: we were very hungry. The third day was the turn of the ferries: from Chaiten one arrives in 30 minutes to Caleta Gonzalo where can get on a ferry for a trip of 20 minutes until Leptepu. From here it can drive on land for 10 - 15 km to embark again on another ferry until Hornopiren, for navigating 4-5 hours. 10_Puerto Montt_Angelmo (10)Before arriving to Puerto Montt there is another stretch of half an hour on another ferry but it is so fast that you do not even get off the car. At the end of the day, we were happy because we made it to our destination on the 7th as scheduled; actually, in the morning it appeared quite problematic: the first ferry from Caleta Gonzalo had been cancelled because of bad weather and the ferry company gave no indications for the day. We panicked immediately, since the connections with ferries were infrequent and with limited places on board. However we were lucky having only 2 hours late on the roadmap. 10_Puerto Montt_Angelmo (17)The next day before catching the flight back to Santiago, we went for a walk to the harbour where there was obviously the fish market. The district Angelmo' seemed to have become very touristic, but not knowing how it was before, we enjoyed it. Behind the port, there were sea lions lying lazily in the sun getting ready to allow tourists to take pictures as real VIPs. The port was on two levels: downstairs there were stalls with fresh fish, small samples of cevice (raw fish with lime and onion) with different types of fish and tables full of fried potatoes, fish and shellfish. Upstairs instead a lot of small restaurants where I tried the cancato, a cholesterol festival: this dish is made with grilled salmon (or snapper), topped with fresh sliced tomato, sausage pieces and melted cheese. Yummi!!
