Patagonia Cilena – Carretera Austral, 1a parte

Chilean Patagonia – Carretera Austral The Carretera Austral is a route desired by the dictator Augusto Pinochet to join the Chilean Patagonia to the rest of the country. Mostly, a dirt road of almost 1,300 km, running from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins.9_Chaiten_ParcoPumalin_VulcanoChaiten (14) After twenty years to build, from 1976 to 1996, now they are asphalting or at least trying to improve it. We started from Chaiten, where the ferry docked from Chiloe at noon of February 26th . Super sleepy after a night of naps in the car and 5 hours of sailing, we arrived at Chaiten ready and willing to visit the El Amarillo hot spring and make a trail to see the glacier near Lake Yelko. These are just two of the excursions we did between mountains, lakes, glaciers and villages of the Chilean Patagonia. We have done so much in few days (a little more than a week) that to remember all the places and mini adventures we had, we need to have a look at the photos. -First day on the Carretera, El Amarillo hot springs and walk to the glacier. 1_Chaiten_Termas El Amarillo (7)Chaiten at first glance after we arrived did not make a good impression; thank goodness that the small village is part of the Pumalin Park, decreed in 2012 the sanctuary of nature. Part of this park are the natural hot springs that we were willing to visit: the baths are part of a project to improve the park and have been, including the village before these, renovated and improved, creating a cozy corner of the park, clean and pleasant. After being refreshed with warm baths and bread and salami, we set off to reach the path of the mirador. According to the guide in two hours we'll be back. In fact the two hours are indeed abundant to walk on the path in the woods, to reach the lookout and to come back. 2_LaJUnta_Mirador del Rio (5)Satisfied of our walk and sweaty, we got in the car to reach La Junta, a small village in the south, where we decided to sleep. To save some money (Peter and I were very attentive to this aspect of the trip, and Tatiana and Costanzo helped us with flexibility) we decided to eat at home: we opted for pasta with tomato sauce and a delicious egg and tomato. We found a place to sleep at the 'Mirador del Rio', a farm 6 km outside the town. This has been great choice: comfortable beds, silence restaurateur, homemade bread and jam for breakfast and a starry sky. -Second Day on Carretera, Park Queulat. 2_ParcoQueulat_Mirador_Pranzo (7)From La Junta, we reached Puyuhuapi, a village with a funny and unpronounceable name, where we were told that the road was closed daily in two distinct sections from 13 to 17 for roadwork. We were lucky because our goal was to arrive to the Queulat Park, just before the first block. The National Park Queulat offered several trails, well marked and clean, including the lagoon, mountains and waterfalls. The first we did was the longest: two hours to reach a mirador in front of the glacier, surrounded by vegetation, perfect for our picnic lunch. We also had the falls in the background and the birds who came in search of breadcrumbs. How nice! 2_ParcoQueulat_Laguna (5)Once in the valley we sunbathed at the lagoon, which was created by the glacier. The colors were once again like in a postcard: heavenly water, blue sky with some white clouds, the glacier in the distance and the dark green of the vegetation. Almost a fake landscape. Also that night we were lucky to be able to sleep well, in fact we reached Villa Manuales, a micro village before the big Coyhaique. Here after several visits to horrible places, we found a super new and clean bungalow. Happy with the conquest, we went for dinner to a place where the lady had a big scary pot with a tasty soup. Even today, we had a beautiful day! -Third Day on Carretera, Coyhaique and Puerto Aysen. 3_PuertoAysen (19)Coyhaique is a big and industrial city in the Aysen region, and apparently it is continuing to grow. Here we found a large supermarket that allowed us to add salmon to our usual picnic lunch, which we consumed in the public gardens, such as the homeless, but happy ones. Here we have collected information in three information centers: tourism, forestry and rural (they were really organized!), but after such gathering, we left something .. the lonely planet guide, on the bench or somewhere in the garden. It was not a big loss, but when travelling a book guide becomes almost like a traveling companion, part of the group. We tossed and turned all the places we went but nothing, so we decided to put the blame on Costanzo and continue for Puerto Aysen. In reality here in Coyhaique there were two parks to visit, but we decided to see them when returning: Taty and Costanzo had the flight to Santiago from here, so we needed to come back. The evening continued much better after trying to find on the road the 'famous; waterfalls of the Virgin and the Veil dela Novia, two mini waterfalls that at the beginning we could not even see. Once in Puerto Aysen, we found a place to sleep like a hostel that offered to us a tent for four with bathroom. It looked like a tent of the SES and the lady there shot a figure from the hotel; we pulled on the price and we tool it. 3_PuertoAysen (26)3_PuertoAysen (27)           We were originally directed to the beer festival but at the last minute we preferred the 'Patagonian sheep' (ovella Patagonica), a very good restaurant where between grilled meat and baked fish, we finally filed the day before returning to the tent 🙂 -Fourth Day on Carretera, Cerro Castillo. 4_CierroCastillo_MuseoScuola (7)Continuing further south we arrived to the Cerro Castillo Park, which has 180 thousand hectares of glaciers and lagoons. Unfortunately we discovered once in the village of Villa Cerro Castillo (original name) that the fastest path consisted of six hours walking to the lagoon Chiguay... we preferred to head towards the cave of hands, just behind the corner. This was a site similar to what we found in Argentina, in Perito Moreno, but much smaller and poorly maintained. The attractive part of the whole site was the museum school that sat peacefully in the valley, at the foot of the mountain where there was the wall with handprints, right in front of the mountain Castillo. 4_CierroCastillo_MuseoScuola (5)The museum was well-made and was accompanied with the visitor center opened in 2013, a space for teaching, equipped offices and kitchen. In the evening we decided to drive to Puerto Rio Tranquillo scoring 200 km daily. Researching and especially finding an accommodation in Puerto was a drama: we searched for an hour to take a bungalow we saw last. Incredible stroke of luck because the cabana was in front the General Carrera Lake (this is divided in half with l'Argentina, who calls his part Argentinean Lake - of course). We celebrated at the cerveceria with salmon, the speciality of this area.
