2 – È una città che non rinnega il passato ma guarda al futuro.
Dalla città più pericolosa della Colombia è diventata la più moderna con un sistema di trasporto funzionante, tra i migliori al mondo, vincendo il titolo di città più innovativa del mondo nel concorso indetto da The Wall Street Journal e Citigroup. Il sistema metropolitano funziona e bene, testato anche nell´ora di punta prima della partita del Colombia contro l`Argentina per la Coppa America. C`è un sistema di metrocable che porta turisti e non, in cima al parco Arví, passando da 1.400m a 2.500m del parco. Molto suggestivo.
Il suo passato, tra malaffare, Pablo Escobar e violenza, è ben presente a tutti i ´paisa` (abitanti di Medellin) che hanno deciso di dare una ripulita all`immagine della città investendo nelle infrastrutture (la città è un super cantiere tra rifacimento strade e marciapiedi o sviluppo della linea) e nella cultura (ho trovato una settimana di eventi di tango per l`anniversario della morte di Gardel: tutto gratis, ben organizzato e con gran concerti come gli argentini Ariel Ardit e Amores Tangos).
Simbolo di accettazione del passato e voglia di migliorare si vede palesemente in Piazza San Antonio dove ci sono sue sculture di Botero, entrambe raffiguranti un uccello: la prima è reduce dall`attentato del 1995 quando una bomba caricata a bulloni e chiodi è esplosa nella piazza gremita di gente in un sabato sera uccidendo più di 30 persone; invece di rimuoverla hanno deciso di affiancarne una nuova raffigurante lo stesso uccello che però si erge orgoglioso con le sue rotondità boteriane. Il messaggio è chiaro: andiamo avanti ma l`ennesimo attentato in 70 anni di guerriglia non si dimentica.
3 – I paisa, gli abitanti di Medellin, che ho conosciuto sono molto particolari: allegri, come tutti i Colombiani, ma orgogliosi di essere di Medellin. Questa arroganza da capitale del mondo secondo loro deriva dalle origini socio-economiche della città: la società è nata da una commistione di ebrei e baschi spagnoli in fuga dalla santa inquisizione, i quali si sono rifugiati nella vallata protetti dalle montagne. Altra ragione sarebbe lo sviluppo economico e commerciale avuto nel passato anticipando tutte le altre parti della Colombia: prima con l`oro, poi con il caffè ed infine con la droga i paisa hanno avuto tanto da fare con un sacco di persone diverse.
4 – Guatapè e`un paesino ad 1 ora e mezza da Medellin, ha due particolarità: è tutto colorato con maioliche e zoccoli pitturati a mano ed è vicino alla pietra di 220m che permette una vista a 360 gradi della vallata lagunare artificiale. Nel 1970 il comune decise di inondare 2262 ettari per ricavarne un complesso idroelettrico creando un enorme serbatoio d´acqua con isolotti abitati e raggiungibili da ponti.
La roccia spicca sulla pianura come il Pan de Azucar di Rio de Janeiro, ma per raggiungere la cima invece della funivia ci sono 740 gradini.
5 – Sono stata fortunata nei miei 5 giorni a Medellin ho incontrato tante persone interessanti e simpatiche. Quando si viaggia da soli in realtà non si è mai da soli, si è più aperti e disponibili all`approccio, basta un sorriso o un HOLA ed il gioco è fatto, ma incontrare viaggiatori o persone del posto che sono sulla stessa lunghezza d`onda è un´altra storia.
Ho alloggiato al The garden of blues dove tra i ragazzi che lo gestiscono e i vari ospiti sono stata sempre in buona compagnia, dentro e fuori l`ostello.
Mi è dispiaciuto partire ma la costa caribica mi aspettava 🙂
Colombia – Medellin, la industrial. Medellin is beautiful. Why?
1 – It is the hometown of Botero, the Fernando de Las Gordas. The artist, who painted and sculpted people, animals and objects with distorted and voluminous forms. A curious and generous character who donated many pieces to his fellow citizens: in front of the Museum of Antioquia, where is his collection of paintings and sculptures, there are giant reproductions of some of his sculptures, in Botero square precisely.
I did not know that in addition to his workshops in New York, Paris and, of course, Medellin he had one also in Pietrasanta, Italy.
2 - It is a city that does not deny the past but look at the future.
The most dangerous city in Colombia has become the most modern with its functioning transport system, among the best ones in the world, winning the title of most innovative city in the world in the competition organised by The Wall Street Journal and Citigroup. The subway system works well, also tested during rush hour before the match of Colombia against Argentina for the America's Cup. There is the metro cable, a system that brings tourists and not, to the top of the Arvì park, from 1.400m of the city to 2.500m of the park. Very impressive.
His past, including criminality, Pablo Escobar and violence, is well represented in all 'paisa` (residents of Medellin) who decided to clean up the city face investing on infrastructure (the city is a super roadwork between renovation streets and sidewalks or development of the line) and culture (I found one week of tango´s events for the anniversary of Gardel´s death: all free, well organized and with great concerts as the Argentinean Ariel Ardit and Amores Tangos).
Symbol of acceptance of the past and desire of improvement, it can be seen clearly in San Antonio Square where there are two sculptures by Botero, both depicting a bird: the first is a veteran of the attack in 1995 when a bomb loaded with bolts and nails exploded in the square packed with people on a Saturday evening, killing more than 30 people; instead of removing it, they agreed to add a new one depicting the same bird but standing proudly with its roundness Botero style. The message is clear: we go along but this other attack in 70 years of guerrilla is not forgotten.
3 - The paisa, the inhabitants of Medellin, I met are very particular: cheerful, like all Colombians, but proud to be paisa. This arrogance on the capital of the world according to them comes from the socio-economic origin of the city: the city was born from a mixture of Jewish and Spanish Basques fleeing the Inquisition, who took refuge in the valley protected by the mountains. Another reason would be the economics and trade development happened in the past, anticipating all other parts of Colombia: first with gold, then with the coffee and finally with the drug, the paisa have had much to do with a lot of different people.
4 - Guatapè is a village, close an 1 hour and a half from Medellin; this has two characteristics: it is really colorful all over with colored majolica and hand-painted clogs and it is close to the rock of 220m, which allows a 360 degree view of the artificial lagoon. In 1970 the council decided to flood 2,262 hectares to obtain a hydroelectric complex creating a huge tank of water with islets inhabited and accessible by bridges.
The rock stands out on the plain like Pan de Azucar in Rio de Janeiro, but to reach the top instead of the cable there are 740 steps.
5 - I was lucky in my five days in Medellin, I met so many interesting and nice people. When you are traveling alone actually you are never alone: one is more open and willing to talk, just a smile or a HOLA and that's it, but meeting travelers or locals who are ´on the same page´ is another story.
I stayed at The garden of blues where among the guys who run it and the various guests have always been in good company, in and out the hostel.
It was sad to leave but the Caribbean coast was next 🙂
