Diving at Gordon Rocks I went there almost for this 🙂 I contacted the agency of Juan Carlos Maccarone, Galapagos DOC, who is the face and soul of his shop. In fact I went diving with him and Nathy, an Argentine dive master; we headed to Gordon Rocks in the north east of the island Santa Cruz. It is an area full of currents, which is called so because of three pinnacles (rocks) that form two corridors under the water, populated by many animals. In fact, what I saw here, I had not seen anywhere else. As seabed I've seen better, but in terms of fauna: wow! First time I went over 30 meters and I have been surrounded by so many animals: sea lions, giant sea turtles, manta rays, white tip sharks and black tip sharks, huge Galapagos sharks and hammerhead sharks - simply amazing. All together. The current was so strong that we waited on the rocks and in a few seconds many sharks passed by; as soon as I saw them, I grabbed the hand of my buddy Raul, Argentine from Patagonia, who is still laughing; I freaked out in front of the hammerhead sharks, but it was enchanting. Squali pinna bianca e leone marino Squali Martello e squali pinna nera Tartaruga gigante Galapagos instructions As an independent traveller, I decided to tender to the all-inclusive trip. I did not have much time to search for information, much less to go there and lose a precious afternoon hunting around. What I have chosen was a package with two islands of 5 days and 4 nights. With hindsight (when everyone is more conscious and informed), and I'd say 'better go there, look for last minute offers about a cruise or land/sea tour - as I did, in a large number of agencies'. Agencies are needed because you cannot visit and really appreciate the place without a certified guide, who knows how and where to go. The rules of the park and the marine reserve have been stiffened for all in the last years and, honestly, I met often park guards who vigilant controlled both tourists and certified guides. I am satisfied with the journey I did, but I enjoyed more the two-three days at the end of my trip when I was by myself after the group left. I decided to stay longer to dive that was obviously not included in the package, and it wasa great decision. One must be careful to frauds, but with a little of chutzpah, cash money and a bit of Spanish you can find many good offers. The group 4_MiguelHumbertoIn my group there were all Ecuadorian people and one American, mostly couples on their honeymoon and pensioners. In the two days at Isabela Island I was the youngest, I was alone with the 'grandparents'. I took it well! And from the series 'cheerful people God helps them', I was lucky: they were thoughtful, pampering me, telling an Ecuador that I did not seen and know, joking and playing as children. My favorite Miguel Humberto of 85 years, he told me about his life in Ecuador between political and socio-economic changes. Another luck, the two guides: we had one for the Spaniard and the other for the only English speaker, but in the end she joined the group (of grandparents) and the other offered to me small changes to the program, as snorkelling at other beaches that was not included in the tour, shortcuts and less touristy walks, snacks at his aunty kiosk (hahaha) and dinner with lobster, always at the restaurant of the tour guide' aunt. Cannot complain!
