Arica – Nord Cile

Arica – La citta' dell'eterna primavera.
Arica – the city of eternal spring! 2_Morro de Arica (1)Arica is the last city of Chile before Peru', of which it belonged 'till the end of 1800. It is at the top north of the country and it is far 30 hours by bus from Santiago... yes we did 30 hours in the bus!! but it was worth to do it because the scenarios and sightseeing are breathtaking. Arica is a small beach city town that counts great beaches for surfing, a hill in the middle of the city, the Morro de Arica, which has on top an arms museum and a great lookout, and Chinchorro mummies museum at its feet. It is famous also for its port, used by Bolivia as only gate to the water. Today Arica is an important touristic city for Bolivians and Chileans, that can enjoy the beautiful weather almost for all 12 months of the year. It just happened for us to be there when there was the carnival, which is apparently the third most important carnival of South America after Rio in Brazil and Oruro in Bolivia. 2_Carneval con la fuera del sol (51)The International Carnival of the Andes 'with the Strength of the Sun', this is the official name, is the result of a fusion of two cultural events in the region to promote the culture of the local populations with African and Andines origins. The two events happened in the same period of the year, January – February, they decided to optimise and since 2005 they have only one but bigger, for three days. 2_Carneval con la fuera del sol (28) We saw the first day when 62 groups from different areas and regions took part to the parade, which started at 12pm and finished at 4am of the following day. In theory, the parade should end around 1.30am but when all these people are together dancing I guess it was difficult to stick to the planned schedule. In fact it was not possible. This is the program for three days having also the direct TV no-stop; the 62 groups took turns with a different timetable for each day so that, all audience can see them. 2_Carneval con la fuera del sol (42)The costumes were impressive with bright colours and very refined with paiettes, feathers and few little objects. Obviously these are symbolic for the traditions and the history of the populations from the Andes. Curiosity: few groups had big and small bells on their boots as the Sardinia mamutones, other groups played instruments similar to the Italian 'zampogna' and the dances were representative of fight for women or ironic scenes of reproduction. 2_Carneval con la fuera del sol (29)There are different dances with traditional steps from the Bolivian, Peruvian and Chilean populations as the 'Diablada' where the good and the bad are fighting, while dancing, or another dance which is called 'Waca Wacas': the dancers have under their belts a mask representing a bull or a cow, there is a torero and heaps of women with feathers; the dancing scene consists in the bulls fighting and killing the torero and then celebrating with the 'wacas' (cows) and the feathery women. This is all I could understand by observing the dances and asking explanations around!
